in Ironbridge. I should really have posted this first as this was the first shot from that outing. The building on the right (edge of photo) houses a nice curio/bric a brac centre, a good place to have a browse. Off the roundabout you can see the steep and narrow road leading up to the church. The road behind the arrows on the roundabout is the one leading to the high street and the bridge itself.

the view from the bridge looking to the right, this shot doesn't really support my comment of how quiet it was, but I have no idea where the people from all those cars were. Bit of a 'toytown' look going on here with a fake tilt shift.

Finally a trip out with the camera, the first of this year! So it was off to a favourite place and hoping the weather wouldn't be too grey. Anyway it was a good job I took some photos before we had lunch as it was raining and grey afterwards. I'm standing behind the War Memorial to take this shot, and the building you can just see on the far left top corner is the toll house (seen here last May, was it really that long ago!).

Having recently finished scanning 160+ negatives, I thought this one would do nicely for a vintage sits. vac. I believe the ship is the SS Himalaya, and this particular cruise was in 1951.

Much as I love old photos, generally speaking I'm not a fan of colouring them as a way to either enhance or recreate the memory (as in most cases it's only speculation), however I find that colouring a vintage image for use in a manipulation can add dramatically to the atmosphere.

I've been scanning negatives from some orphaned photos, and today's batch unearthed this one (amongst others) of a trip to Venice in 1952. So there is a chance that this is back to front, but I thought it made a nice vintage sits vac.

at Stourport, the boats are moored in the basin (at least I think that is what it is called), they seem to have to turn round here and then go under the bridge (looks like a tunnel here) and into the lock to head back to the Midlands. Another shot from earlier this year which would otherwise remain unseen.

I have to confess that I have only just 'found' Soulsavers and I could listen to this album intravenously, if you know what I mean. I was watching an episode of 'Lie to Me' and heard some music that just blew me away, googled to find out what it was and it turned out to be 'Kingdoms of Rain'.

On most of these old gravestones, it's pretty much impossible to read all of the inscription when you are actually there looking at the stone. So when you upload the photo and zoom in to get at the really hard to read bits, then you find more sorrow.

I was only going to post the verse with this image, but thought the first lines on the gravestone really did make you think about the people. The daughter and mother died the same day, the daughter in Liverpool, the mother in Newtown.

Farouk can actually only be the 'author' of the last pile, which I saw him walking away from as he cleared his throat. The other 3 piles were just there and I suspect more likely his brother was the culprit.

As you can see, Farouk looks none the worse for it.

at Droitwich was built in the 1930s, the pool was filled with brine, so it was billed as the seaside coming to Droitwich. Here's the wiki link. As you can see the season was already over when I was in Droitwich.

So continuing along the High Street, Droitwich. You can see that the street is a bit uneven in places and of the old buildings that remain, some lean and are quite crooked, well only last week I was reading about this in a newspaper from 1913. Apparently the subsidence and leaning of the buildings is due to the brine being pumped out from the underground brine river and at that time the buildings and street were moving by about an inch per year. The writer highlighted an old black and white pub where the floors sloped, tables and chairs needed something put under the legs to make them stable, and everything leaned, although he assured the reader that all the walls were securely propped up so there was no danger whatsoever.

A couple of weeks ago I had a walk round Droitwich, having stopped to take the shot of the Star and Garter, I then turned right and walked up into Droitwich High Street. Part way along the high street, you get this view over the car parks and up towards Dodderhill Church. In 1842 my 4x great grandparents were married there.

I haven't been in, in case you're wondering, but I like the architecture and am glad that the pub and the building are still there.

Edit: Origins of the name 'Star and Garter' - 'the name comes from an abbreviation of the name of the insignia belonging to the Order of the Garter', according to wiki, whilst this isn't the Manchester pub that the article speaks of, the name is fairly common as a pub name, you can find the wiki links here and here.

Having said that about traditional pub names, more of the old names and signs are disappearing, as the pubs that survive, have a makeover or are re-invented as an Indian or Thai restaurant, and 'drop' the names they have had for years and years and years, to go for something modern and instantly forgettable.
